Re-Restoration of Blue Star Marker -- September, 2014
The Bayou Vista Garden Club, a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., finally after three long months had their Blue Star Memorial Marker honoring area veterans restored with the help of area businesses. The sign was razed in May after the club had the sign refurbished just two weeks earlier. The club thanks Charles Green of Paragon Metalworks, Clarence McGuire of J in C Concrete, and Mark Richard of the Bayou Vista Community Center for their part in the restoration of the sign and the foundation. Club members replanted Firepower Nandinas that were also damaged.
Blue Star Marker Restoration -- May, 2014
Bayou Vista Garden Club
President Donna Bucci and BVGC member Donna Richard gave a presentation to the
St. Mary Marine Corp Detachment 600 on the Blue Star Markers and how the
National Garden Club, Inc. honors veterans. The Blue Star became an icon in World War II and was
seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war, as well
as in churches and businesses. The Blue
Star Highway system covers thousands of
miles across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. A large metal
Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was placed at appropriate locations along the
way. Memorial Markers and By-Way markers
were added to the Highway Markers, to be used at locations such as National
cemeteries, parks, veteran's facilities, and gardens.
The Louisiana Garden Club Federation's "Freedom Isn't Free" project started during Bucci's administration as LGCF President, with the first Blue Star Memorial Marker going to the WWII museum in NO. The project also includes By-Way Markers to be installed at all Military Installations in the state--the first went to Ft. Polk.

Bayou Vista Garden Club
sponsored the restoration of the Bayou Vista Blue Star Marker on Southeast
Boulevard. The Blue Star Memorial
Program honors service men and women.
This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted the program and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. A large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was placed at appropriate locations along the way. The program was expanded to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the armed services of the United States. Memorial Markers and By-Way markers were added to the Highway Markers, to be used at locations such as National cemeteries, parks, veteran's facilities and gardens.
Thomas L. Stelling of Historical Markers Restorations performed the refurbishment in time for Memorial Day, May 26, 2014.
