Trash to Treasure & Pass-Along Plant Sale -- October, 2015
Bayou Vista Garden Club recently sponsored its Trash to Treasure and Pass-Along Plant Sale fundraiser and expresses its appreciation to the community, KQKI, The Daily Review, and staff of Bayou Vista Community Center for its support. Environmental Studies School -- June, 2014

Vista Garden Club members, Donna Bucci and Jo Ann Ryan, recently attended
National Garden Clubs, Inc. Environmental Studies School in Jean Lafitte,
Louisiana, sponsored by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc.
The Living Earth Environmental Studies Schools are composed of a minimum of forty hours of study of specific units divided into four Courses of ten hours, each of which includes a two-hour field trip. The Courses investigate AIR, LAND, and WATER. The units are divided in Ecology and Environmental Science, Life on Earth and Earth Stewardship.
Bucci and Ryan have completed the required courses and have taken four refresher courses to reach the status of Master Environmental Consultants.

Bois d'Arc Iris Farm Tour -- April 17, 2014
Rusty McSparrin led several members of the Bayou Vista
Garden Club on a tour of Bois d'Arc
Gardens Iris Farm in Schriever, which is owned and managed by Bud and Rusty
McSparrin. Bois d'Arc is a state
licensed nursery and a Nationally Certified Wildlife Habitat and Bird
Sanctuary. The McSparrins are members of
the Society for Louisiana Irises, the Native Plant Society, the Louisiana
Nurseryman's Association, and are Master AIS Judges. Many selections hybridized by the McSparrins
were at peak bloom. The educational tour
included a handout and discussion on the history and cultivation of Louisiana
irises.
Painting with a Twist -- New Member Social -- January, 2014
"Painting with a Twist" was the program for the
new member social held by the Bayou Vista Garden Club. Reagan Beaubouef, St. Mary Parish School
Board art teacher, instructed participants in the basic painting techniques to
apply to selected designs. Beaubouef's
painting parties, Margaritas &
Masterpieces, provide an opportunity for painting novices to be creative in
a relaxed social setting. Participants

Environmental Studies School -- August, 2013
Bayou Vista Garden Club President Donna Bucci and Vice President Jo Ann Ryan attended the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. (National Garden Club, Inc. affiliate) Environmental Studies School in Jean Lafitte, Louisiana. Some topics covered in Series III, Course I, “The Living Earth”, were Plants Biodiversity, Ecology, Earth Stewardship, Wildlife, and Native Plants. A nature discovery field trip was taken to Jean Lafitte National Park. A visit was also made to the Jean Lafitte Nature Study Park where attendees hiked on a one mile boardwalk over a 40 acre cypress swamp. The hike was lead by Robert A. Thomas, Ph.D., Professor and Director of the Center for Environmental Communication at Loyola University, New
Orleans.

Trash to Treasure and Plant Sale--September, 2012
Bayou Vista Garden Club recently held a Trash to Treasure and Plant Sale at the Bayou Vista Community Center. The variety of plants, propagated by BVGC members, included agapanthas, aloe vera, bromeliads, butterfly ginger, butterfly weed (A. tuberosa), daisies, daylilies, Coral Fountain firecrackers (Russelia equisetiformis), kalanchoe, Louisiana iris, Mexican petunias (Ruellia brittoniana), mock orange (Philadelphus), walking iris (Neomarica gracilis), and wild petunias (Ruellia sp.). BVGC would like to thank all those who contributed items to the sale.
