BVES Vegetable Garden -- From Garden to Table
Bayou Vista Garden Club partnered with Bayou Vista Elementary School to implement the National Garden Club’s School Gardens Project. In the Fall, BVES 5th grade students planted carrot seeds and broccoli seedlings in the raised planter boxes on BVES campus. The vegetables produced were harvested by students this Spring and given to BVES students during recess on “Healthy Snacks” day.
St. Mary Parish 4-H Junior Fair and Livestock Show -- January, 2017
Bayou Vista Garden Club members Donna Bucci and Dawn Thomason served as judges for the Horticulture Division at the St. Mary Parish 4-H Junior Fair and Livestock Show held at Franklin Senior High School. Bucci is certified by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation as a Gardening Study Consultant. The ladies also judged several craft divisions including wreaths and holiday décor. NGC School Garden Project --BVES Wildflower Garden--November, 2016
As part of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation “Pollinators Live” initiative, Bayou Vista Garden Club Adopt-a-School Chairman Donna Richard and President Donna Bucci presented a program on wildflowers to the Bayou Vista Elementary School 1st and 2nd grade classes. The book Buzz-Buzz Busy Bees by Bentley-Calhoun, donated to BVES, was read and discussed to stress the importance of bees and other pollinators. Tires were donated by Albert Soto, owner of Brothers’ Tire Service of Morgan City, for plant containers. Donna and Doyle Richard constructed and painted the tires in the form of a lady bug, frog, and bumble bee. Students sowed wildflower seeds and planted violas, salvia, and Mexican petunias. BVGC donated seeds, plants, watering cans, and a “Gorilla” cart.
NGC School Garden Project--BVES Butterfly Garden -- November, 2016
As part of the National Garden Club School Gardens project, Bayou Vista Garden Club Adopt-a-School Chairman Donna Richard and President Donna Bucci presented a program on butterflies to the Bayou Vista Elementary School 3rd and 4th grade classes. The display board “Encourage Monarchs in Your Garden” showed appropriate host native plants to attract butterflies, habitats to sustain the butterflies, and stages in the life of a monarch. Students then planted, watered, and mulched container butterfly gardens with butterfly weed plants and seeds, lantana, and pentas. BVGC donated barrel containers, watering cans, plant stakes, mulch, plants, and seeds.
Bayou Vista Garden Club donated three books to the Bayou Vista Elementary School Library – National Geographic’s Flutter Butterfly, Monarchs by Kathryn Lasky and photographs by Christopher G. Knight, and Gardening for Butterflies by Gary Noel Ross, Ph.D. The posters donated were provided by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation: Louisiana Native Plants, Blooms of Louisiana Forests, Fruits of Louisiana Forests, Leaves of Louisiana Forests, Common Forest Plants of Louisiana, and Features of Louisiana Forest Plants. BVGC Garden Program for J. S. Aucoin Elementary School--October, 2016
Bayou Vista Garden Club Adopt-A-School Chairman Donna Richard presented a gardening program to the J. S. Aucoin Elementary School Lion Garden Club. Richard provided information on seasonal planting of vegetables, sowing seeds in starter pots, and gardening maintenance; which included light and water requirements. Activity sheets, two watering cans, and carrot seeds were given to the Lion Garden Club. J. S. Aucoin received a grant from the LSU Ag Center for the school garden. Jessica Randazzo, LSU Ag Center Area Nutritionist Agent, was present to advise and to determine materials required for the grant.

Bayou Vista Garden Club partnered with “Tiger” Cub Scout Pack #438 to implement the National Garden Club’s School Gardens Project. The raised planter boxes are located at Bayou Vista Elementary School. The damaged boxes were refurbished, weeded, filled with soil, and fertilized by the Cub Scouts and BVES students. As part of the Adopt-A-School program, BVES students will plant vegetables and sow seeds. The vegetables produced will be made available to BVES students during “Healthy Snacks” days.
NGC School Garden Project--Herb Container Garden--September, 2016
As part of the Adopt-A-School program, Bayou Vista Garden Club partnered with Bayou Vista Elementary School to implement the National Garden Club’s School Gardens Project. BVGC Adopt-A-School Chairman Donna Richard presented a program to the BVES Pre-Kindergarten and NCP Special Education classes which included reading the book Way to Grow! Gardening: Planting and illustrating using a Community Helper Gardeners display poster. The students were given an activity booklet to reinforce the lesson. Students then planted herbs in the containers located in the rock garden near the classrooms. BVGC donated containers, rocks, garden trowels, watering cans, and Community Helper identification tags to assist students when maintaining the gardens.

As part of the Louisiana Agriculture in the Classroom program, volunteer readers receive a free book in exchange for reading it to students and donating the book to the classroom. All classes in grades PreK-3 at Julia B. Maitland School listened to this year’s book, Exploring Louisiana Agriculture. Bayou Vista Elementary School students and Bayou Vista Garden Club members completed the final harvest of carrots in the vegetable gardens planted at BVES in the Fall. BVGC Adopt-A-School Chairman Donna Richard planned and organized the "Healthy Eating" project in conjunction with BVES Principal Carol St. Germain, St. Mary Parish Supervisor of School Food Service Claire Guarisco; BVES teachers Kayla Perry (PreK) and Marita Voison (P.E.), and BVES Cafeteria Manager Jennifer McDonald.

In an effort to encourage healthy eating, Bayou Vista Garden Club Adopt-A-School Chairman Donna Richard recently donated fruit and vegetables as snack options during Bayou Vista Elementary School afternoon recess. Included were carrots dug up from Richard's home garden. Student response was positive and all of the healthy snack options were sold. Proceeds donated to BVES. Janice Verret assisted.

Ag in Class, 2015 -- As part of the Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom program, members of the Bayou Vista Garden Club recently read the book, Chicks and Chickens by Gail Gibbons to area students. Ann Breaux, Youth Committee Chairman, read to students in Ms. Rebecca Domangue’s class at Maitland School. Mary Myers, Youth Committee member, read to students in Ms. Gail Breaux’s class at Bayou Vista Elementary.

BVES Ag Literacy Day -- March, 2014
Bayou Vista Garden Club Youth Committee
Chairman, Ann Breaux, recently shared a story with the first grade classes (Ms.
Woods, Ms. Besse, Ms. Jett) at Bayou
Vista Elementary. The book, “Who Grew My Soup?”, tells the story of young
Phineas Quinn, a boy who refuses to eat his vegetable soup until he finds out
where the vegetables come from. The storyline leaves the reader with an
appreciation of our nation’s farmers and the importance of the work that they
do. This activity was in conjunction with the Louisiana Agriculture
Literacy Project.

Kai Wininger, a Bayou Vista Elementary School student, is pictured with her winning entry submitted in the National Garden Club Youth Sculpture contest. Ms. Tamatha Bogg's 5th grade students at BVES participated in the competition during the Fall 2010 session. Kai constructed her "flower pot" using recycled materials.
