The Schaubs are members of the Louisiana Ornithological Society, Terrebonne Bird Club, and Crescent Bird Club.
Schaub discussed providing a backyard habitat to attract birds which included native plants, a water source, and shelter. The focus area for birdwatching outside the backyard was America’s Wetland Birding Trail, Loop 6—St. Mary, which encompasses the Atchafalaya Basin. Schaub identified local areas for optimal bird watching.

They primarily eat crustaceans, small fish, insects, amphibians and reptiles They’ll also eat grains, marsh plants and acorns. The habitat of Whooping cranes are wetlands, mudflats, wet prairies and fields. They can live above 20-25 years in the wild. The Whooping Crane is protected under the United States Fish and Wildlife Endangered Species Act.rticulture BVGC President Donna Bucci distributed potted hurricane lilies (Lycoris radiata), a “pass-along” plant, to all club members. These lilies, also known as spider lilies, can be found in yards and gardens throughout the southeastern US at the height of the hurricane season each October. Gloria Roy and Janice Verret served as hostesses for the meeting. The floral design, “Shrimp Boats A-Comin’," was created by Roy. The boat container was handmade by Roy and filled with shrimp plants (Justicia brandegeeana), an evergreen shrub native to Mexico. The flowers emerge from bracts that form off the stems. The bracts start out white, but with more sun exposure they turn anywhere from pale pink to deep salmon. Blooming continues for months and the flowers attract humming birds and butterflies.
The Bayou Vista Garden Club Publicity Press Book received the National Garden Club, Small Clubs, 1st Place Award which was presented at the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Summer Board meeting. BVGC expresses its appreciation to The Daily Review for its support in achieving this award.

All About Herbs -- April, 2016
"All About Herbs" was the theme for the Bayou Vista Garden Club April meeting. BVGC members preselected herbs at the March meeting and then made food dishes using the selected herb for the April meeting. Horticulture information and a specimen were provided by the members. The variety of dishes included entrees. salads, desserts, tea, and baked goods.
Environmental Awareness Chairman Kim Alcina repurposed old window frames to display planters filled with parsley, lemon thyme, basil, hot spicy oregano, cilantro, and sweet pepper.
Horticulture Chairman Jean Chauvin exhibited the Bee Balm (Monarda) plant. Bee balm flowers are brilliant additions to late-summer herb gardens and flower borders. Butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other nectar-seeking creatures covet the tubular flowers on the plant's rounded flower heads, and the leaves and flowers can also be made into tea.
Wildlife Chairman Annita Blanco reported on the Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera), both positive and negative aspects. This species is documented as a noxious invader in the southern U.S. In eastern Asia, the waxy coating of the seeds is used for candle and soap making, and the leaves are used as herbal medicine to treat boils.
Hostesses Jeannie Lawrence and Verdie Laws created the floral design, Basket of Spring Friendship. The door prize winner was Jo Ann Ryan.

"A Garden for All Seasons" was the theme for the Bayou Vista Garden Club's February meeting. Glenda and Norman Balliviero presented a slide show of the Balliviero gardens throughout the year and provided information on plant culture. A variety of seeds from their gardens were given to BVGC members. The Ballivieros are on the board of the Louisiana State Horticulture Society and the Louisiana Society for Horticulture Research.
Kim Alcina, Environmental Awareness Chairman, repurposed a candelabra for the "upcycling" display. The electrical sockets were removed and the candelabra was painted bronze. Flower pots planted with begonia were inserted into each light socket.
Horticulture Chairman Jean Chauvin displayed a dwarf palmetto (Sabal Minor) native to Louisiana for the horticulture exhibit. This common, fan-shaped palm is a small shrub, 5-10 ft. tall. White blooms are followed by black fruit about 1/2 inch wide in long clusters. The economic values for the plant are roof thatching, source of fibers, and a producer of honey. A variety of bird species feed on their berries, as well as mammals such as opossums and raccoons.
The feral hog problem in Louisiana was the focus of Wildlife Conservation Chairman Annita Blanco. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries is concerned about the increasing number of feral hogs which destroy levees, destroy crops, damage habitat for other game animals, and are plagued by a multitude of diseases that can affect humans, commercial swine operations, or wildlife.

It is an evergreen perennial which can grow to 15 feet. It is often grown as a houseplant or outdoor garden plant in temperate climates. Chauvin distributed handouts on the cultivation and care of the plant.
The topic of Wildlife Conservation Chairman Nancy Marcel was the endangered whooping crane, North America’s tallest bird. Population numbers dropped to tens of birds at their lowest, and today they’ve bounced back to 600 thanks to some serious conservation efforts. The whooping crane's primary natural breeding ground is Wood Buffalo National Park, in Canada's Northwest Territories and Alberta. When summer ends, these migratory birds set out for the Gulf Coast of Texas, where they winter in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.
Hostesses were Donna Richard and Donna Bucci. The floral design, Stepping Out for Valentine's Day, was constructed by Donna Richard. The design was created in a high-heeled shoe and contained red roses accented with heart-shaped bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana), variegated ivy, maidenhair fern, and nandina.
