"It's About Time" Standard Flower Show, April 30, 2011

A Standard Flower Show, as outlined by National Garden Clubs, Inc.was presented April 30 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Patterson. This was the first Standard Flower Show sponsored jointly by the four member clubs of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation in St. Mary Parish. Sponsoring the event were Bayou Vista, Franklin, Morgan City, and Patterson Garden Clubs. Twenty floral designs, one hundred thirty horticulture specimens, and four educational exhibits were prepared by garden club members.
Winning entries in the Design Division were Angular, Donna Bucci; Reflective, Renee' Vanover; Stretch, Donna Richard; Functional Tray, Sandra Marshall; and Underwater, Sandra Blanco. The Designer's Choice Award was presented to Donna Bucci for her Angular artistic design. Members interpreted their chosen design category and competed utilizing fresh or dried plant material.
In the Horticulture Division the winners were as follows: Arboreal Award, Betty Casselman, Mimosa tree specimen (Albizia julibrissin) and Grower's Choice, Sharon Larson, "peanut" cactus (Chamaecereus sylvestris) Awards of Merit were presented for Annuals, Linda Gaspard, Stock (Matthiola); Perennials, Sue Robicheaux, Kangaroo Paw (Anigazanthos); Bulbs, Corms, Rhizomes, and Tubers, Sue Robicheaux, Oriental Lily-Red Alert; and Roses, Pam Breaux, Old Garden Rose (OGR)-Prosperity. Pam Breaux also won the overall Horticulture Excellence Award for OGR-Prosperity. Donna Richard received the Sweepstakes award for the most blue ribbons received.
The Educational Exhibitors presented with Awards of Appreciation were Janice Verret, "A Beautiful Solution to Water Pollution," rain gardens; Linda Veitinger, "Trash to Treasure," unique planting containers; Jo Ann Blanchard, "Growing Time," plant propagation; and Evelyn Estay, Vegetable Time in Louisiana," planting to harvest.
The Chairmen of the Standard Flower Show were Sandra Blanco and Evelyn Estay. Coordinating the event were the club presidents, Janice Verret, Bayou Vista; Linda Veitinger, Franklin; Jo Ann Blanchard, Morgan City; and Evelyn Estay, Patterson.
The show was open to the public and sparked interest in the activities of area garden clubs.
